    FINALISTS

The Mooretown Jr. Flags Bantam Rep team fell just short of their second tournament championship with a 1-0 loss in the Finals.

In Round Robin play the Jr. Flags won their division and secured 1st seed overall by sweeping their games (5-0 over Hespeler, 8-1 over Hamilton, 5-0 over Amherstburg).  As 1st seed Mooretown earned a bye into the Semi Final Round.  In the Semis the Jr. Flags again came out on top with a 5-3 victory over Caledon.

Mooretown played some great hockey in the offensive zone while playing solid in their own end as well.  In 4 games to this point the Jr. Flags only incurred 7 minor penalties as their puck possession was at times dominating.

In the Championship game vs undefeated Burlington the Jr. Flags were unable to get on track as the game was quickly thrown off the rails by penalty trouble.  While they did manage to create some excellent opportunities any shots that did get past the solid Burlington netminder only managed to find the iron.  Playing shorthanded for 20 minutes out of a 40 minute contest had a huge impact on the flow of the game and the offence just couldn't click in getting shutout for the first time this season in a 1-0 loss.

In all it was an exciting and impressive weekend of hockey.

    FINALISTS

The Jr. Flags had 3 shutout wins sandwiched by 2 disappointing losses in finishing in 2nd Place at the Watford Regional Silver Stick.

Mooretown started the seeding portion of the tournament dropping a 5-1 decision to Mt.Brydges.  The game was tied 1-1 going into the 3rd before a couple quick strikes early by the Cougars deflated the Jr. Flags.  The Jr. Flags got back on track the next day, shutting out Wallaceburg 3-0.  With being placed as the 4th Seed Mooretown was matched up with Wallaceburg again in the Quarter Finals and dominated in a 6-0 victory.

This put Mooretown in a Semi-Final match-up with Mt.Brydges where the Jr. Flags battled their way to a well played 2-0 win.  The winner was scored with just 21 seconds left in the game, followed by an empty netter.

In the Finals Mooretown met up with Petrolia.  In a back and forth affair the score was 0-0 after 2 periods of play. The Jr. Flags would lament a hit post and crossbar.  Mooretown struck first in the 3rd to take the lead but the Oilers scored twice 2 minutes apart just shy of the midway point.  With Mooretown pressing and their goalie pulled, Petrolia managed an empty net goal to seal the victory.

It was a hard fought game that earned both teams a spot in the International Silver Stick Finals tournament being held in Forest the weekend of January 22-24.

    CHAMPIONS

The Mooretown Jr. Flags Bantam Rep team went undefeated in Forest over the weekend to capture the 2016 International Silver Stick Finals Championship.

Mooretown started the tournament with two very tough matchups on Friday.
Game 1 was against a strong skating Penetang Flames team that was a goaltending dual that went into Overtime.  Luc Thorne-Smith was solid between the pipes with only a screened powerplay goal getting by him early in the 3rd.  With just under two minutes to play Steele Harris took a feed from Luke Nahmabin and tied the score on a hard slapshot from just inside the blueline.  Then, just 46 seconds into Overtime Logan Gardner roofed a snapshot from in tight to win the game 2-1.

Next up was the Petrolia Oilers.  Playing without a couple of regulars due to injury the Jr. Flags played a gritty game on the small Thedford ice.  Petrolia grabbed a 2-1 lead early but Mooretown battled back to head into the room after the 2nd up 3-2.  Petrolia tied it early in the 3rd on a scramble with goalie, puck and players all being pushed into the net.  The Jr. Flags didn't relent and Harris put them back in the lead two minutes later and sealed a 5-3 win with an empty netter.  Thomas Snary, Jason Heggie and Cole Clements all buried tallies and Gardner picked up three helpers while Kaymond Turner battled hard in net to hold off a determined Petrolia offence.

On Saturday morning the Jr. Flags looked to secure the 1st Seed heading into the Semi-Finals with a win over Syracuse, NY.  Again playing on the smaller ice Mooretown was able to out battle a small but quick Thunder team enroute to a 4-1 victory.  Dom Aliperti set the tone early as he chased down a long clearing play from Riley Brown, after Walker Holmes won a board battle inside the blueline, and poked the puck by the goalie as he raced out to cover it.  Barclay off a behind the net feed from Clements, Gardner off a breakaway pass from Snary and Jake Vandersteen off a deflection from Blake Howard provided the scoring.  Thorne-Smith continued his steady play in net to take the win.

The Semi-Finals went Saturday night with the opponent being the Littleton Hawks out of Colorado.  Back in Forest on the large ice surface the Jr. Flags dominated play to take a 5-2 victory and earn a berth in the Final.  Goals were scored by Heggie with two, Barclay, Clements and Luke Houle.  Turner took the victory in net with another solid outing.
With Petrolia defeating Penetang in Overtime in the other Semi the Championship would be a rematch of the Regional Qualifier Final.

The Championship Game was exactly what was expected from two very evenly matched teams.  The Jr. Flags were energized with the return of Josh McLean to lineup for the first time since the opener on Friday.  The play went back and forth from the get go with some huge hits, many offensive chances and great goaltending. Petrolia would get on the board first, knocking in a rebound with just 4 seconds left in the 1st Period.  Mooretown began to carry the play in the 2nd but were unable to find the equalizer while Thorne-Smith was spectacular in making sure Petrolia couldn't add to their lead.  After the 2nd Period break Mooretown came out determined and took it to Petrolia, dominating the play from the start.  Harris, from Gardner and Snary tied the game a couple of minutes into the 3rd and the Jr. Flags kept the momentum coming close to potting the go ahead goal numerous times.

As the match up deserved, the game headed into Overtime.  Neither team sat back with each pushing the play to score the winner.  The first Overtime blew by with barely a whistle and into a second Overtime.  Mooretown buzzed around the net, their game down low starting to wear on the Petrolia defence, and created some great scoring chances only to be thwarted by desperation blocks and some miraculous saves.  At the other end Luc Thorne-Smith calmly turned aside anything sent his way and the defence of Blake Howard, Riley Brown, Casey Vanderveeken and Luke Houle shut down the Petrolia shooters and moved the puck out of their zone with cool efficiency.  With neither team finding the back of the net a 3rd Overtime, and 6th period, was needed.   The Jr. Flags continued to keep Petrolia on their heels and bombard the net.  Just over halfway through the period Mooretown again controlled the play down low to get the Petrolia defenders scrambling.  Gardner and Barclay outworked their coverage along the boards and Barclay was able to make a quick wraparound move with the goalie caught just inches out of position. With Harris jamming out front the puck was finally sent sliding over the goal-line.  In a play of desperation a Petrolia defenseman dove onto the puck and grabbed it as it crossed the line.  Without hesitation the referee amplified the drama and signaled a penalty shot!

With all but the Petrolia goalie on their benches, and the large crowd silent, defenseman Blake Howard was sent out to centre ice.  Howard skated smoothly down the middle of the ice faked forehand to backhand and then back to forehand as the goalie slid in the opposite direction.  The puck was easily put into the back of the net to clinch the 2-1 victory and the 2016 International Silver Stick Championship for the Mooretown Jr. Flags Bantam Rep team.

Howard and Harris were announced as Tournament All-Stars.
