'Twas The Night Before Christmas 2017
An adaptation for the Peewee Rep Team

‘Twas the night before Christmas and out on the ice.

Not a creature was stirring, not even the mice.

The players were all nestled all snug in their beds.

While the parents all rested their tired hockey heads.

With cases of beer and bottles of rye.

It provided the remedy for those games gone awry.

And for those who decided not to partake

Plenty of water, pop and juice, and of course Gatorade.

Coach Tom had his list, it was full of some wishes.

But the main one was for his players to just listen.

Santa knew about his list including the staff’s

A-A-Ron wanted another razor. Slick just wanted some a**. (Axe…Axe body spray)

J-Fry hoped for a nice snow machine

But his wife said “forget it, I need some new jeans”.

But breaking the silence of the fresh fallen snow

Coach Tom heard some strange sounds of that he didn’t know.

It was the sounds of a winner, of course not on the Wings.

It was Auston Matthews, the Leaf, and he began to really sing.

“On Jaden. On Brander. On Avery and Chase.

On Tyler. On Carter. On James and MacLean.

Sterling, Devine and Casyn, let’s go!

Ticknor, Brayden and Jake, on your toes.”

It is time to practice and time to play smart!

Now skate away! Skate away! Skate away hard!!

Matthews moved like a flash in his bright white and blues.

And he knew that he had a pile of work to do.

These players had potential, he could certainly see.

But they needed a little push and a lesson for free.

Auston brought them all out from their beds to a huddle.

And told them straight away, get their heads out of the bubble.

It was time to learn hockey, skate hard, and stay focused.

The real work was starting, this time is a bonus.

And then with a whistle, he yelled how it was done

Keep your head up and go, never stop, always fun.

And just when you think that you have run out of steam.

Never give up, keep going, and don’t fall on your bean!!

The team was in awe in Matthew’s presence so fair

Coach Tommy unfortunately was still in despair.

It wasn’t his Lidsy or Stevie or Drapes

“The writing was on the wall”, had said the legend oh Grapes!

Shanny and Babs had seen the obvious direction to go.

Head east to Toronto where the stars are aligned, they all know.

Matthews was the new beacon of hope in the big hockey city.

That was tired of sorrow and being the land of such pity.

Moving up from the bottom was the team’s only priority.

Trading spots with the Sabres, the Oilers, and Coyotes!

The Peewee Reps did their best to impress number 34

But their bodies grew tired and their feet were so sore.

Matthews knew that the boys had done their absolute best

It was now up to them to take their new skills to the test.

As he packed up his gear and called it a night,

Auston gave them a message to remember for life.

There is no 'I' in team, you must play as a group

And taking bad penalties will land you in poop.

Pass the puck, win the battles. Block the shots for the goalie.

Clear it out, support your teammates. Earn your way to the trophy.

And with that he was done and skated into the sky.

Leaving a streak of success upwards so high.

The boys tried to find him but they could only see

The stars of the night, he was gone guaranteed.

But in the vast distance, a voice they heard from below.

A final yell for his fans, ‘twas Go Leafs Go!
