The St Clair Storm Atom Girls travelled to the Belmont, Aylmer and Dorchester area this past weekend to challenge for their 3rd tournament win this season. This tournament saw some new challenges for our girls as they faced some new teams and one regular season rival during tournament action.
The Storm opened the tournament with 2 solid victories on Friday over London Tigers and the West Grey Wildcats to get off to a good start. Solid defensive play and golatending coupled with scoring from different sources on the team were the keys to these victories. Advancement to the semi-final was not assured, however, as the other games played out and on Saturday, the Storm faceds a tough host team, the BAD Girls Blazers who faced elimination and had their backs against the wall. The Blazers utilized a two on the puck attack that made life difficult for the Storm defense, but the Storm would not be quelled. It would require a solid defensive effort from all players and great goaltending with a timely goal from a previously snakebit player to allow the Storm to edge out the BAD Girls in a 1-0 victory. A hard fought, tight and exciting game, but the Storm were on their way to the Semis.
Sunday morning found the Storm facing an old adversary from regular season play in the semi-final. The MItchell Meteors came to play and played a good game, but St Clair was able to score 2 and hold Mitchell of the board to advance to the final later that afternoon.
The final saw the Storm facing the West Grey Wildcats again who had just won a thrilling semi-final in OT with 30 seconds to go. The Storm jumped out to 2-0 lead early in the game and appeared to have the game in hand, but a West Grey sinper had other plans when she roofed one in the top corner to make it 2-1. The game ebbed and flowed with each team having their moments, but the Storm defense and goaltending held. Then another goal from an end to end rush sealed the game and the St Clair Storm Atom Girls claimed their third tournament victory of the season.
Hard work and a never give up attitude were the hallmarks of this tournament victory. Well done ladies!!!! You should be very proud of yourselves. Its a rare thing to win 1 tournament let alone 3. I am very proud of you!!!
