On Friday the 26th of October, 2012 the Mooretown Storm Novice rep team arrived in Detroit to compete in a Hockey Time Productions minor Atom hockey tournament.
The Storm took to the ice Friday evening
against the Kitchener Jr Rangers Novice team.
Mooretown hit the ice and were looking good early showing confidence and
had a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period.
The team continued their strong play but the Rangers weren’t about to
lay down, The Rangers pushed hard to the
final horn but Mooretown held on for the 8-7 victory. A highlight of this game was Kelby Derrick
getting a goal on his birthday.
Saturday morning came early with a 7:30am
puck drop, as the Storm players had a tough test against the Redford Royals
minor Atom team. The Storm parents had a
tough battle with the alarm clock. The
Royals were a big, strong and fast team and the Storm had to move the puck well
to keep the Royals in check. The Storm
did just that trading goals with the Royals until the game ended in a 5-5
tie. A highlight of this game was when
Owen MacDonald played the part of Bobby Orr going end to end finishing with a
back hand to the top corner.
The Storm then kicked it pool side and took
in a movie prior to the 5:20pm puck drop against the
Pickering Panthers minor Atom team.
The Pickering Panthers were big, fast and
aggressive but the Storm were able to frustrate the Panthers with quick
accurate puck movement. The Storm were
not intimidated by the Panthers going into the corners without fear and winning
the individual battles. The Storm played
the Panthers to a 6-6 tie. A highlight of this game was a breakout pass from
deep in the Storm end that hit Graham Armstrong in stride at the center ice
line. Armstrong fired a shot home five
hole on the Panthers net minder.
The Storm finished the round robin in first
place with a win and 2 ties. The Storm
were off to face the Pickering Panthers in the championship game on the Sunday
morning, overshadowing game 4 of the world series.
The Storm played one of their best games of
the year controlling the play. The Storm
were very effective with their passing game and fired 33 shots on the Panthers’
goaltender while allowing only 9 on their own net. The Storm fell to the Panthers by a score of
2-0; however the score did not tell the story of the game. The Panthers’ goaltender went on to be named
MVP and for good reason.
All members of the Storm played their
hearts out and should be proud as they showed heart determination and teamwork
in the face of stiff competition. Well
done boys.
